  • New mascot unveiled for Across the Lake Swim

Kelowna's historic Interior Savings Across the Lake Swim has launched a contest as it unveils its new race mascot.Help name the new mascot for the swim.Photo Credit: Across the Lake SwimHelp name the new mascot for the swim.

The swim began in 1949 and is the longest running and largest annual open water event in Canada. Hundreds of swimmers take to the lake every year to challenge themselves and compete against others in the 2.1 kilometre swim from the Old Ferry Docks in West Kelowna to Hot Sands Beach in City Park. With more than 1,200 swimmers competing every year, the popular event sells out fast.

New for this year is the little bear mascot. Dressed with googles and water wings, and sitting within an inner tube, the bear has everything it needs, except a name. The organizers of the swim are looking to the public to help name the bear and are offering a prize package worth over $300 for the winning name. The prize would also include an entry for you and a friend into next year's swim.

The contest ends on June 30, 2016 and those interested in submitting a name can do so by visiting the Across the Lake Swim website. This year's swim will take place on July 16, 2016 and will mark the 68th consecutive edition of the event. Volunteers are still needed for the event and those interested in lending a hand can sign up online through the official website.
