If you’re tired of tacos, there’s a new food truck rolling into town that promises anything but.
Ross Derrick is the founder of Codfathers, a popular seafood market and restaurant in Kelowna, and now he’s the proud owner of the Broken Anchor.

“I was bored in September and I said ‘I could do more,’” he explained when asked what led to the decision.
So he bought a food truck in October and has been working on bringing Broken Anchor to life over the past couple months.
The Broken Anchor has a simple four item menu that will bring Southern food to the Okanagan.

The menu was inspired by meals he says he often enjoys when vacationing and visiting with friends down in Louisiana and Texas. Although it’s not completely traditional Southern food, it is a lot closer to anything you’ll find in the area.
You can look forward to meals like maple butter fried chicken, which Derrick says is a “Canadian spin” of the classic Southern staple.
They’ll also be serving up pulled pork, which Derrick says will be done the right way – smoked for 12 hours in a proper smoker. On the menu will be a po' boy, a traditional Louisiana sandwich, as well.
“We're not doing tacos, that's our number one thing,” he says. “We're anti-tacos because every food truck seems to do tacos.”

“There's nothing on our menu that's at any other food truck that I've seen. We're having a small menu and it's delicious, and it's all home made and high quality. We're not pre-buying pulled pork, it's actual food cooked in a proper way.”
They’ll be officially up and running in early April, but the community got a sneak peek at the new food truck this afternoon for a Foundry Kelowna fundraiser outside Codfathers.
The Broken Anchor is serving food by donation until 4 p.m., with proceeds going towards the organization.
The now 33-year-old chef has been in the business for nearly 19 years, and spent his early 20s training in Ireland, Germany, France, and Spain.
"I met a girl when I was 22 and moved to a place that I had never heard of before called the Okanagan Valley," he says. From there on out he's been behind some recognizable and successful restaurants.

Derrick opened the Globe restaurant at Big White about 11 years ago, and Sparkling Hill nine years ago. He spent some time at the Delta Grand before moving onto Codfathers, which has been around for five years now.
Right now, this is the third project he has on his plate, with the restaurant and their catering business.
“Everything's always a side hustle,” he explains. “That's my big belief in life, that everyone should have at least one side hustle, and this is just my third side hustle.”

Although it may be a side project, that isn't to say it's not going to be done well, he says. It's not their main source of income, and he expects it to be a fun experience for everyone.
"When we're having fun, it's guaranteed that the food's going to be fantastic."
As for where they’ll be, keep an eye on their Instagram page. They’ll be posting every Monday what their locations will be for the week.
