More and more Canadian families are bringing in two incomes, finding that having two parents out in the work force is better, according to a new report from Statistics Canada.

As part of their monthly report called Canadian Megatrends, they looked at the growing trend in the number of women joining the workforce. From 1976 to 2015, women's employment rate increased a whopping 22 per cent.

Because of this, more kids in Canada are growing up with two parents who work.

In fact, the number of Canadian families with two working parents, raising at least one child under 16, has nearly doubled in the last 40 years, from 1 million families in 1976 to almost 2 million in 2015.

Now, these families where both the husband and wife work make up about seven in 10 families with children, whereas in 1976, they accounted for four in 10.

Over that period, the proportion of families where just one parent earned a paycheque fell by more than half, dropping from 59 per cent to 27 per cent while the number of dual-income families has nearly doubled, from 36 per cent to 69 per cent.

Statistics Canada says this is because of factors including changes in cultural attitudes, improved female education, general market conditions and more support and corporate acceptance for working parents.

Numbers range across the country when it comes to families with two incomes. While Alberta used to have the highest proportion of deal-earner couples in 1976, in 2015 they had the lowest proportion at 64 per cent. Last year, B.C. was just one spot above Alberta while Saskatchewan and Quebec had the highest proportion of families with two parents working.
