  • UPDATE: Major Coquihalla crash sends 29 to hospital, highway has fully reopened

(UPDATE: 8:55 a.m.) – The Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) is open in both directions following a major crash on Sunday night.

(Original story: 6 a.m.) – There was chaos on the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) overnight.

A serious crash involving two transport trucks, two tour buses and multiple vehicles sent 29 people to hospital.

Another 136 uninjured people were taken to a warming centre in Hope following the accident near Othello Road.

The accident, which occurred late on Sunday night, closed the highway in both directions for a number of hours.

The highway has since reopened northbound, but remains closed southbound.

According to BC Emergency Health Services, multiple ground and air units responded to the scene and the 29 patients taken to hospital range from stable to critical condition.

Not only did your typical emergency crews respond to accident, but both Hope and Chilliwack Search and Rescue were called in to assist.

Hope Search and Rescue reports that part of the recovery involved vehicles that had tumbled down a 90 foot embankment.
