The third season of True Detective has been announced, along with the unveiling of the latest actors to star on the hit show.

Mahershala Ali is joining True Detective's cast for season three.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Ali will play, Wayne Hays,a police detective in the Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas.

Ali took home an Oscar for his supporting role in the Academy Award-winning film, Moonlight, this year. 

Season three tells of a 'macabre crime' that's laid out three through three different time periods.

True Detective writer, Nic Pizzolatto, is said to be the lone writer for season three and has most of the script completed.

Rumours are circulating that Mathew McConaughey may resurface during the third season, as previous plots left the door open for his character to return.

While no exact date has been given, the show is expected to premier sometime in 2018.

Ali became more well-known through his role as Remy in HBO's House of Cards drama.

He's also played roles in Crossing Jordan, NYPD Blue, CSI, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, The Hunger Games and Free State of Jones, to name a few.
