Lululemon Patents Everything from Bras to Duffle Bags to Stop Knock-Offs

Lululemon is back in the patent fight as the Vancouver company looks to protect the rights to its sports bras and tank tops, by threatening to sue competitors.

In 2012 the company famously sued Calvin Klein and G-III for violating a design patent on its yoga pants. Since then Lululemon has accumulated a total of 31 patents covering everything from bras to duffel bags. Now the company is looking to use the patents to keep competitors at bay by threatening litigation.

Lululemon did reach a confidential settlement with the two companies over their “Astro Pants” but took longer to be as successful with Hanesbrands over a top that was sold in Target stores. Lululemon sent a cease and desist order to the company but they filed a countersuit against Lululemon basically saying the tank top is nothing special nor is it the exact same. That case has since been settled, though the terms have been kept confidential.

It’s not very common for the fashion industry to apply for specific patents for items such as bras and pants but it seems as though Lululemon is on a patent rampage. It could be a sign the company is looking to regain some ground in the athletic apparel market as earning fell last year amid several controversies.
