Kevin Moore, better known to Kelowna as DJ Invizible, will soon test his talents at the national turntable competition Red Bull 3Style.

The global competition is held in 20 countries, where 120 DJs will show their skills on the wheels of steel for the opportunity to compete in the World Finals next year in Moscow, Russia. 

While Moore only recently found out he’d been invited to the prestigious event, his submitted video showcasing his skills took months to craft and even then it was no sure thing he would be picked as one of Canada’s top six DJs. 

“I spent three months working a couple hours a day on my routine,” explained Moore. 

“I knew the competition was going to be really stiff, but I tried to stay true to myself and piece together some creative world play and flashy turntablism.”

At the national level, Red Bull 3Style requires a bit more than just cutting and scratching on the decks. 

“The judges like you to represent your culture, so I’ll incorporate some Canadian vibes, but I also have Japanese and Caribbean heritage so there will be elements from those cultures as well.” 

Despite being arguably one of Canada’s top six DJs, Moore is a family man first and actually found out he had been chosen to compete just before heading off to his day job on a Monday morning. 

“I burn the candle at both ends,” laughed Moore. 

“I’m a father of three and my middle child is a high-level hockey player, which isn’t exactly a cheap hobby.”

After working his day job four days a week, Moore transforms into DJ Invizible on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights where he holds down resident gigs and establishments like The Perch, Central and Jacks in downtown Kelowna.

And that’s before the weekend, which is always the busiest stretch of the week for any DJ. 

Of course, you don't make it to a national DJ competition without dedicating a large portion of your life to the craft. 

For Moore, that began in the mid-90s when those looking to up their skills had to drive to a specific record shop in Vancouver to study VHS tapes of turntable battles. 

In fact, when Moore first starting DJ'ing he had zero interest of performing for a crowd, he just wanted to scratch records. 

"It wasn't until my local mentor DJ Krucial K, who did the Saturday night Hot Mix on Sun FM at the time, started hooking me up with vinyl records that I began learning how to rock a crowd," recalled Moore.

"From there I became a resident at Splashes, before it was rebranded as Level, that's where the name DJ Invizible comes from because no one could see me in the poorly lit booth!" 

With nearly two decades of experience on the turntables, Moore believes he has shot at winning the competition, but the main objective is to enjoy the experience.
