Kelowna residents are being asked to give their input as the city looks at adding off-leash dog beaches and parks in several different locations.

A community discovery session will take place on June 15 as the city releases information on the potential locations at the Cedar Avenue beach access, Lake Avenue access, Poplar Point Drive beach access, “mini” beach near the Sails Plaza and Munson Pond Park.

“The statistically valid survey conducted earlier this year indicated that there is a demand for more off-leash dog beaches in particular,” said Robert Parlane, parks and buildings planning manager. “The purpose of this session is to enable residents to provide feedback on the proposed locations. It’s also an opportunity to identify potential concerns and look at possible solutions.”

The session will take place in Kerry Park, 1480 Mill St., from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Staff are to be on hand to answer questions.

There are currently only seven off-leash dog parks and two temporarily off-leash parks in Kelowna. There are currently no off-leash dog beaches in Kelowna, although many take their pups off-leash at the Cedar Creek dog park.

Residents unable to attend the information session are encouraged to get involved by providing feedback online from June 7 to 28. All proposed off-leash areas are subject to community input, council approval and budget approval.
