There will be no West Coast League baseball played at Elks Stadium this summer.

The Kelowna Falcons announced today that the team has cancelled its season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions that will be in place throughout the summer in BC.

“Nothing is more important to our club then the health and safety of our fans, players, coaches, umpires and staff,” said Mark Nonis, Falcons GM. 

“Despite the improvements we’ve heard in BC from health officials, we don’t anticipate a return to play until late summer or sometime in the fall.”

Nonis added that the majority of the team’s road games are in the United States and with cross-border travel still restricted, the team would only feasibly be able to play the Victoria Harbourcats.

It’s anticipated that other WCL teams will join the Falcons in cancelling their seasons as well, but the WCL as a whole hasn’t pulled the plug on anything just yet.

“It's obviously a big blow to the league," said Rob Neyer, WCL commissioner. 

"But we know Kelowna will be back in 2021, so we're considering this just a brief pause in the Falcons' wonderful history, with better things to come."

The team said it’s already looking forward to getting back on the field in 2021.
