Kelowna-based punk band, Early Work, is celebrating their change in musical direction with the release of their newest single “The Everyday.”
Known for being one of Kelowna’s newest groups within the sphere of punk, Early Work has garnered itself a loyal fan-base thanks to their raw recordings, catchy riffs and relatable lyrics.

Looking to head into 2020 with a change of pace, the group is trading in their DIY methods for a slightly more polished sound with rich tones, unique time signatures and new subject matter.
The first glimpse of the new and improved Early Work was unleashed to the public on Dec. 12, with the release of “The Everyday,” an intoxicating song that in just over three minutes will have you hooked.
While the band may have previously fallen into the angsty stereotypes of their genre, frontman Easton Doran says his lyrics and content often stem from his at times “darker outlook” on various topics.
In regards to the new single, Doran says the song is about his frustrations with society, specifically the vanity and pretention he at times sees around him.
“It just reflects the way I feel about certain things, [the song] is not really supposed to be political because we are not really a conceptual group,” he said.

“It is a bit playing on the genre but it also shows people the at times nihilistic way that we can think,” he added.
“It’s not totally intentional but my darker outlook on things can sometimes seep into the songs but so does the nature of the valley and the everyday beauty within it.”
Recorded in Vernon by Jared Schmidt and mixed by Jordan Chase of Oodelally Recordings in West Kelowna, the single marks the group's first time placing their trust in another to produce their music.

Thrilled with the results, Early Work will be continuing their collaboration with Chase to bring the vision for their forthcoming EP to life.
“Jordan is known for his work with Kelowna punk bands and once we heard his rendition of our song, we knew we wanted to stick with him for the EP,” said guitarist Kurtis Janot.
According to Janot, the EP will tread more so on the side of pop punk rather than the rock-infused sound they are used to playing.
“The new pop punk edge was definitely intentional and something we plan to carry throughout the EP,” he said.
“If you listen to our older recordings, they are more of an in-your-face punk rock sound, the new stuff will be a bit darker and denser with more serious lyrical content, falling into the category of pop punk or emo.”
Echoing the sentiments of his bandmate, Doran adds that the group has also made a conscious effort to bring in more diversity to their music.

“We plan to keep with the sounds and tones of the single, while also bringing in different tempos and time signatures,” he added.
Due to be released in April of 2020, fans will have to hold on a little longer before experiencing the full extent of the band’s musical evolution.
