  • Just over half of Canadians support changing federal electoral system, says poll

A slight majority of Canadians are in favour of conducting the next federal ballot under a different electoral system.

In a survey conducted by Research Co., 51% of the 803 Canadians surveyed would welcome ditching Canada's current first past the post system.

According to the results, those surveyed would rather vote for the House of Commons through a party-list proportional representation.

Under a party-list system, parties make lists of candidates to be elected, and seats get allocated to each party in accordance with the number of total votes the party receives.

If Canada's 2019 federal election had been held under the party-list system, the Conservative Party would have finished in first place with the support of 33% of decided voters, followed by the Liberal Party with 32%, the New Democratic Party (NDP) with 18%, the Green Party and the Bloc Québécois each with 6%, and the People’s Party with 4%.

Voters in Alberta and Quebec are more likely to support a change to party-list proportional representation (58% each) than their counterparts in Manitoba and Saskatchewan (53%), Ontario (47%), British Columbia (46%) and Atlantic Canada (45%).

The survey comes after a heated federal election that saw the Conservatives win the popular vote, but the Liberals win the most ridings, resulting in a Liberal minority in Ottawa.

Countries such as Austria, Denmark, Finland, Israel and Spain currently use a  party-list proportional representation.
