BC Ferries announced “Island Gwawis” as the name of their new Island Class ship in a ceremony on Wednesday.

The name was chosen after consultation with ‘Namgis First Nation and means “raven of the sea” in the Kwakwaka’wakw language. It is the sixth ship of its class to be put into operation by the company. 

The vessel is set to serve the Nanaimo Harbour-Gabriola Island route and has the capacity to carry up to 450 passengers and 47 vehicles. 

Additionally, the ship employs hybrid technology, using both fuel and battery sources to power its components, and is seen as a step towards developing a more environmentally sustainable fleet:

Island Gwawis is scheduled to be put into service later this year.
