  • In Focus | Kendra Mulgrew of chandralokah

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

    What is your name?
    Kendra Mulgrew

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I’m from Kelowna. Lived here since the age of four.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My mother. She’s just so wonderful.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
I would stay exactly where I am for this place in space and time is so perfect as it is already.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Chai Baba. Beautiful tea, employees, owner, tea accessories, energy. Great place to have a friendly conversation and feel welcome to be yourself.

    What is your favourite activity?
Does meditation count as an activity? The act of “non-doing”… If not, then swimming.

If you had to choose: pizza, tacos, or burgers?
You mean sprouts, salad, or quinoa, right?

What is a hidden gem you enjoy in the Okanagan?
I’ve spent countless hours listening to the flowing water up at Crawford Falls.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
Hmm, peeing my pants at school in grade one is probably the most embarrassed I’ve ever fel. I’ve done some pretty embarrassing things, however, I don’t tend to get embarrassed these days.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Did it happen to me or did I do it? 10-day silent vipassana meditation retreat (dhamma.org).

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Playing kickball in the street with neighbourhood friends one warm summer’s eve.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
Teaching yoga and meditation in City Park.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
    Accessibility of healthy, local produce.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
The river run at H20 is way too much fun!

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
    Paul’s Tomb on Knox Mountain.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
Turning green space into growing food space!

If you were granted one wish for work or in life, what would it be?
All of my wishes have already been granted.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
    Everyone knows everything about me.

What is the name of your business/organization?
    chandralokah

    What does your business do?
Up until recently I facilitated holistic healing, however, I’ve let that go as I am now working at the Vipassana meditation centre outside of Merritt focusing on meditation and writing.

How to people connect with you through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest)
I’m on Facebook and post to Instagram once in a while. I also put some non-blog writing up on Tumblr.

Where can people find your business online?
I have a website that is constantly changing. At the moment, it is paradoxically stagnant, as my attention is elsewhere, but it serves as a place where past blog posts can hang out.

Why did you get into/start this business?
I started writing right before I broke my back two years ago and it’s been a constant anchor ever since.

What is the goal of your business?
To share my heart, create, inspire, share, and connect.

What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
The recovery from a broken back over the last two years.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
In each and every moment I’m starting again with fresh eyes and deeper awareness. As within, so without.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Not only is it more sustainable for the planet as a whole, it’s more sustainable for each person individually.

Give someone that you think deserves it a shout out and explain why!
William Mulgrew deserves much more than a shout out. He’s such a hard-working, kind, compassionate, patient, loving, supportive son, father, husband, and a member of the community.

My nomination for the In Focus spotlight is:
    Jessica Hoc (Lichon Photography)
