In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

    What is your name?
    Kelsey Davis

What do you always find yourself saying?
    "Where’s my Blistex!?”

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
Oprah. I admire her career so much and her ability to not only share powerful stories, but look critically at issues that affect people and society. I can’t imagine how much wisdom and knowledge you would walk away with if you spent 24 hours with her!

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
An Academy Award for Best Documentary!

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
I think spending a day with Jackie Kennedy would be amazing. I have always had a fascination with the Kennedy’s, and to learn what life in the White House is truly like, and what life in the 50’s and 60’s was like for a women like her would be incredible.

    Who inspires you?
My parents. Their unconditional support and love has gotten me where I am today. They have encouraged me through every step I have taken and constantly assured me I was capable of doing anything I wanted. They are the two most dedicated parents and amazing people I have ever met. I am so lucky to be their daughter, and they inspire me to be the best person I can be.

What are three things on your bucket list?
Take a road trip along the East Coast of the USA, with the final destination being Charleston, South Carolina.
    Complete the West Coast Trail.
Sit front row at an Usher concert.

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
The Pitbull- in reference to the singer, not the dog!

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
My 90th birthday. Hopefully I will still be around, sitting on a porch somewhere, not a worry in the world, looking back on life. All the things we stress about as young people (jobs, relationships, finances) don’t make a 90-year-old worry because they have already been through it.

    What are you passionate about?
Stories. Everyone has a story, and it is a privilege to get to tell stories for a living. Having spent most of my life in aquatics, and eight years teaching swimming lessons, I love water and teaching little ones to swim. Most importantly, I am passionate about my friends and family, as they are the people who make life worth living.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
This is a tough one! When I was at BCIT, a team of us went to Prince George for the Canada Winter Games and created a nightly show from scratch. We were responsible for every element of it, from finding content, reporting, shooting and editing. It was a massive undertaking, and watching that first show on a huge screen in Canada Games plaza was an incredible moment. That same day, Global’s Chris Gailus said my name on the 6 o’clock news (for good reasons!), so not many days have topped that one!

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
I would have to say getting hired at KelownaNow! It has been my dream to be a journalist since I was eight-years-old and, to see that dream come true was very special and rewarding.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
I am new to Kelowna, so I haven’t explored much yet, but last summer I had an amazing dinner at Hotel Eldorado! Amazing food and stunning lakeside location!

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
I could never get tired of hiking Knox Mountain, the view at the top is so spectacular.

    KelownaNow.com

How do people connect with you on Linkedin?

    What is your mission?
My mission is pretty simple. Live a happy, fulfilling life full of joy, passion, love, friends, family, and wine! I think if you have all those things, you are doing pretty well!

If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
Sharing a story that really impacts people. If I can share something that promotes change or opens someone’s eyes to another way of thinking, I know I will have done my job.

Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?
I hope KelownaNow is one of the top news outlets in the province. It is an amazing company and amazing place to work, and I am so excited to watch it grow.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
Lisa Ling is my journalism idol. She tells stories by immersing herself into people’s lives and cultures, always completely un-biasedly. She knows no boundaries and shows no fear. She is completely open to different walks of life, and different ways of living, all while being a badass journalist! I strive to have a career like hers, one that will put me right in the trenches experiencing life first hand.

What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
    Teamwork, support, and excellence.

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
Thank you for all the support as I begin my journalism career! It is not easy to work and train a new person, and the support and love I have gotten from my co-workers has been amazing. I couldn’t ask for a better place to go every day!

How does your business/organization impact the community?
I hope we are able to share stories and issues that matter to community, and give people a positive news experience. The news can be depressing, and I hope we are able to find a positive spin on each story and share important and meaningful stories.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
    Whoa, good question!

If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:
If it could be summer in Kelowna all year round, it would be perfect.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
Kelowna has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. Every time Okanagan Lake comes in to view, I feel so lucky to live here.

My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:
Chad Brownlee! He is Kelowna born and raised, was drafted into the NHL and then became a very successful country singer! Basically, he is the perfect Canadian!
