What is your name?
Jonathan Matlock
What do you always find yourself saying?
Just a sec.
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
My wife. We always have a riot on our sneaky days off together without the kids. Shh, don't tell them!
If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
A Nobel Prize for something. Anything.
If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
You won't find this guy in most history books (yet), but the mountain bike world recently lost one of its greatest ambassadors. I never had the pleasure of meeting Kelly McGarry in person, but his eternally positive attitude and infectious smile will be remembered by everyone whose lives he touched. I wish I could spend a day with 'McGazza'.
Who inspires you?
My wife. Yeah, yeah, cheesy, but she amazes me everyday. She balances being an incredible mom with a demanding and busy professional career. All while taking time to enjoy the little things life has to offer. She's just plain awesome.
What are three things on your bucket list?
I don't have a bucket list, but I would like to ride in a helicopter one day.
If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
Knot Compensating
If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
And spoil the surprise?
What are you passionate about?
Mountain biking. I got hooked in the early 90’s and I've been riding ever since. There's no better way to get out into nature, explore, have fun, get in a little exercise, and meet new friends. I can't imagine my life without a bike.
What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
Just one? Pretty much any great day making memories with my family ranks up there pretty high.
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
I'm the father of the three funniest and most interesting people I know. They make me proud every single day.
Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
Bouchons. The food. The service. The atmosphere. You can't beat it.
What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
Uh, mountain biking. Kelowna has a huge range of trails and terrain, and a great community of mountain bikers.
What is the name of your business/organization?
Spun Studios
What does your business/organization do?
Spun is a small, boutique, graphic & web design company. My clients range from small, one person operations, to large, multi-national corporations whose brands span the globe. I take great pride in my work, and I think I’m pretty easy to work with. That combination has led to long-lasting partnerships with clients. I work on projects of all sizes. Sometimes I only work on a small piece of a much larger project. I love to collaborate.
Where can people find you or your business online?
spunstudios.com
What is your Twitter account?
@matlockjon. You won’t find much though.
How do people find you on Instagram?
@matlockjon If you'd like occasional updates on my bike, kids or the latest creature my cat has killed.
What is your mission?
I think like most people, I’m trying to keep a good balance between work and life. I’m also trying to minimize the “wish I did ______ ” regrets and just go for it.
If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
Early retirement.
Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?
Depends on how the previous answer goes.
Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
Kelowna itself is pushing hard to be a forerunner in this field. I've been blown away with the talent in this town. And, for the most part, the people in the tech industry are open, friendly, and social.
What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Quality, service, and honesty. That sounds lame, I know, but I've worked hard to retain clients and because of those qualities most of my current clients have been with me for years.
What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
Molly, fetch my slippers.
How does your business/organization impact the community?
Each year I volunteer with an organization that works to enhance the lives of underprivileged youth by getting them out snowboarding and mountain biking.
If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
The weather. Unless they like bikes.
If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:
I'm not a big fan of snow. Is there anything Basran can do about an endless summer?
What do you think makes Kelowna great?
People. Food. Nature.
My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:
One of my favourite people to collaborate with, Dan Carter of Red Cherry.
