Breaking News:

This is some breaking news!

  • In Focus | Emily Higham

Meet Emily. She was born and raised in Prince George. She briefly moved away for school but wouldn't leave again. She loves it too much here.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My mom and my fiance, they're my best friends. I can always count on them for a laugh and a good pep-talk when I need it.

What is your favourite local store in Prince George and why?
By far, The Salted Cracker. They always have the best food and the best service. It's also inspirational as a small business owner to see how well they've done.

    Describe yourself in one word.
    Determined.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Dublin, Ireland for two reasons: the culture and the scenery.

What is your favourite activity in Prince George?
I've recently started doing Zumba classes at the YMCA. I'm in love.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
In general, I'm pretty clumsy so I'm constantly embarrassing myself.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Going to school and being taught by designers who are in the field. It was really inspiring to see that people are successful at doing what I've always wanted to do.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Driving down the bumpy gravel road at Christmas time to my grandma's log house.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
The past two years of my life have been spent studying so I haven't had much chance to give back. However, in the future, I hope to be able to donate my services to those who can't afford to have the beautiful spaces they deserve. I'd love to work with organizations like Hospice House and The Humane Society as well.

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would make it so that anxiety and depression didn't exist. I don't think anyone should ever have to deal with that in their lifetime.

Where would you sneak away to in Prince George to spend some time alone?
Somewhere on a trail with a quad.

Where would you like to see positive change in Prince George and why?
I feel there should be more resources for those struggling with their mental health and overall better awareness.

What do you think makes Prince George great?
The sense of community here is unlike anywhere else I've been.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
    1. Travel Europe
    2. Write a novel
    3. Fly in a helicopter

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I'm definitely a mother duck. I care very fiercely about my people.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
    Facebook.

What is the name of your business/organization?
    Emily Higham Designs.

Why did you get into/start this business?
When I was little I was obsessed with HGTV and ever since have wanted to be a designer.

What is the goal of your business?
Eventually, I'd like to have a design and build company, but most importantly I'd like to build a name my great grandkids can be proud of.

What has been your biggest struggle either in work or life?
Finding who I am outside of school once I graduated college.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I wouldn't change anything, especially not the struggles I've been through. I believe they've made me who I am today.

What do you always find yourself saying?
    'You know what I mean'

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
If it is both terrifying and amazing then you should definitely pursue it.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
My Oma, I'm very much like her. She's so witty and always has a good story to tell you. I love being around her.

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
It's important to support local businesses and entrepreneurs because it brings so much to the community than a boost in the economy.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
    Graduating college.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
My mom. She's been my biggest supporter and she's just the kindest soul.
