  • In Focus | Crystal Doughty of Music and Movement for Children

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

    What is your name?
    Crystal Doughty

What do you always find yourself saying?
    Good job!

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
Elton John.  I think he would have some great stories to tell.  Would also possibly be able to get him to sing a song or two.

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
City of Kelowna Honour in the Arts

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
Mozart.  I have a few questions for him about his music.  I also think he would be a funny guy to hang out with.

    Who inspires you?
Jan Harvey.  She is so amazing with children – just watching her interact with them inspires me.  My students also inspire me on a daily basis.  Their curiosity, imagination, and love of learning are amazing to me.

What are three things on your bucket list?
Start a music program for children with disabilities.
Visit many places in the world with my family.
    Learn to play the cello.

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
MaBeDa.   The first two letters of my husband (Mark), and my boys’ (Bennett and Davis) names.

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
My boys’ graduation days.  I’m so curious what life path they will take.

    What are you passionate about?
Music and children – exploring the many different ways students learn.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
Oh boy, I can’t narrow it down.  It’s a three way tie:  the day I married my husband, and the birth day of my two boys.  I can’t imagine my life without them!

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
This is another one with multiple answers!  I am proud and humbled to be the new owner of Music and Movement for Children.  I am honoured to be following in the most wonderful footsteps of Jan Harvey.  I am also proud of my own children and my students every day, which makes me a proud parent as well as a proud teacher.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
RauDZ for the amazing food.  I also love brunch at the El Dorado – incredible view!

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
Culturally, I love the concerts put on by the Kelowna Community Music School, where I also teach piano and theory, as well as the Chamber Music Kelowna and OSO concerts.  As a family, the Park and Play events around the city during the summer are fantastic – my kids love them and so do I.

What is the name of your business/organization?
    Music and Movement for Children

    What does your business/organization do?
Provides enriching, engaging, and fun music classes for children between the ages of six months and seven years.

Where can people find you or your business online?
    www.janharveymusic.com

Where can people find your business on Facebook?
    Music and Movement 4 Children

How do people connect with you on Linkedin?
    Search “Crystal Doughty”

    What is your mission?
To instill an early love of music in young children throughout Kelowna.

If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
To increase understanding of how beneficial music classes are for young children – academically, socially, emotionally, and kinaesthetically.  I often have parents ask: “What are babies and toddlers actually “learning” in music class – sometimes they’re not even paying attention!”  I wish I could fast-forward 10-20 years and show them how successful their children will be.

Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?
Not far from where it is right now!  I absolutely love what I do and wouldn’t change much – except maybe to be able to do more of it.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
    Jan Harvey – no question.

What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Community:  there are so many bonds being made between wonderful families every week.
Acceptance:  I see all different types of personalities in music class – students and parents/caregivers alike.  I love how the dynamic of each class is different!
    Fun:  We have a blast!

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
I don’t have any employees or volunteers.  I have something even better – a fellow music teacher, Miss Dani, who teaches the after-school program.  She is a wonderful person and teacher and I would say to her: “Thank you for being my partner on this incredible musical journey”.

How does your business/organization impact the community?
By bringing families together in the name of music.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
I have always been fascinated by the effects of music on the brain.  If I were trapped in an elevator with a few neuro-scientists with a focus on music, I would be happy as a clam.

If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:
More support of the arts.  I think there is already a strong support for arts and culture, but I would love see more.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
How family focused it is.  Oh, and the scenery isn’t bad, either.

My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:
Natasha Harvey – Natasha Harvey Art – http://natashaharveyartist.com/
Manjeet Sidhu – North Glenmore Esthetics
    Michelle Demman – The Skarf – http://www.reignandgray.com/
