Iconic Hollywood actor, producer and director Kirk Douglas has died at the age of 103.

On Wednesday, son and Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas announced the news via his Instagram account.

“It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,” wrote Michael. 

“To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.”

Known on screen for his cleft chin and gritty voice, Douglas appeared in over 70 films between the 1940s and 2000s. 

He was nominated for an Oscar three times, first for Champion (1949), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), and Lust for Life (1956).

Tributes have poured in across social media since the news of his death broke on Wednesday, with many commenting on Douglas' off-screen presence as much as his time in the spotlight.

In 1996, Douglas was awarded a lifetime achievement award from The Academy to celebrate his 50 years in the industry.
