For those travelling over the Family Day long weekend, ICBC warns it can be a dangerous time to drive in the province.

Road conditions can be unpredictable, with weather varying between snow, sleet, heavy rain, fog and ice.

Because of the weather, and other factors, February tends to have a high accident rate.

On average, there are 19,000 crashes in B.C. during the course of the month.

According to ICBC and police statistics, an average of 24 people are killed, and 5,700 are injured, because of these February collisions.

In the Southern Interior alone, there are usually 2,700 crashes in February causing seven deaths and 690 injures.

ICBC recommends a few driving tips to keep in mind.

They suggest keeping your car in the best shape possible, with winter tires and windshield wiper fluid, planning your route in advance using DriveBC, traveling when it’s light out—if possible, adjusting your speed to driving conditions, and turning off your cell phone while driving.
