Trail Name: Gibraltar Rock (Paul Lake Provincial Park)

Distance: 4 kilometres

Time: 1-1.5 hours

Location: Paul Lake Provincial Park

Difficulty: Easy/Moderate

Directions: Gibraltar Rock is about a half hour drive from downtown Kamloops. Take Highway 5 North and turn right onto Paul Lake Road when you reach the Husky. Continue up this road until it forks, taking the right hand turn toward Harper Mountain ski area. You will then follow this road until you reach the lake, where you will find parking either near the boat launch or just south.

Things You’ll See

Paul Lake is an amazing little hike just outside of Kamloops that offers beautiful views both east and west of the lake. Looking south, you will also able to see the top of a few runs on Harper Mountain.

You can access the trail systems right from the parking lot, campground or from the directions I have given, from down at the boat launch. This is my favourite spot to start, because the hike offers an amazing walk along the lake before you start your ascent to the top.

During the summer, there are many beautiful wildflowers and animals scurrying about. Through the warmer months, don’t be surprised if you see the ground move beneath you and a harmless garter snake appear on the trail. Don’t worry, he’s just enjoying the trail as much as you are and means you no harm.

The trail is dog friendly and usually sees a lot of action, with many people on the lake fishing, as well. My recent April hike was a little muddy and, on the northside face, a little snowy but I’m sure it will melt soon with the weather getting warmer and warmer!

Trail Tips and Things to Bring

This park is dog friendly. Make sure you are a responsible trail user and pick up after your dog! With some snow still left to melt, it was icy on the north sides of the mountain on the way up. Dress appropriately and bring some snacks and lots of water, for you and your furry friend!
