Google has released its 2017 search trends for Canada.

The most search word or phrase of 2017 was Hurricane Irma, which devastated the Caribbean and Florida in September.
 

Meghan Markle, Tom Petty, the Ottawa Senators and North Korea rounded out the top five most common searches.

Harvey Weinstein was the top trending person of 2017, a list that also included Matt Lauer, Kevin Spacey, Éric Salvail and Melania Trump in the top five.

When it came to searches about how to do something, three of the top five are fairly self-explanatory based on events that happened this year.

How do they name hurricanes was the top search, with how to make solar eclipse glasses and how to buy bitcoin in Canada taking the fourth and fifth spots on the list.

The second and third most popular how-to searches were more general questions as people wanted to know how many teaspoons are in a tablespoon and how soon should you take a pregnancy test.

The answers, by the way, are three teaspoons in a tablespoon and a week after a missed period.

When it came to trending searches about why things are happening, it was entirely based on current events from the past year.

Canadians wanted to know why NFL players were protesting the anthem, why flags in Canada were at half mast, why there were so many hurricanes, why were women marching and why does Catalonia want independence.
