(UPDATE March 7 @ 2 p.m.) — RCMP have confirmed one person was killed in a head-on collision on Highway 1 west of Kamloops on Tuesday.

Sgt. Mike Pears said RCMP responded around 1:41 p.m. on March 6 to a fatal collision on Highway 1 near Greenstone Mountain Road. 

"Upon arrival it was determined that a west bound pickup truck with one occupant collided head-on with an east bound pickup truck with four occupants," Pears said in a media release.

"The driver of the west bound truck died at the scene and the four occupants of the other truck were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries."

Highway 1 was closed in both directions until approximately 6:30 p.m.

Kamloops Rural RCMP, Central Interior Traffic Services, Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and the BC Coroners Service are investigating the collision.

RCMP are asking anyone with information regarding the collision to call Central Interior Traffic Services in Kamloops at 250-828-3111.

(March 6 @ 2:30 p.m.) — Highway 1 is expected to be closed for at least four hours after a head-on collision that injured five people, RCMP say.

The crash has closed Highway 1 in both directions west of Kamloops, about half a kilometre west of the Cherry Creek gas station.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said five people are injured, but the extent of the injuries is unknown.

Shelkie said the highway is expected to be closed until at least 6 p.m.
