  • First time in B.C. for 108 Mexican firefighters deployed this week

Just as extreme conditions begin to lead to exhaustion for BC Wildfire Services more international help is on the way.

According to Kevin Skrepnek of BC Wildfire Services, 108 Mexican firefighters will be deployed in B.C. for the first time ever this week.

"They will be extremely valuable and trained to the same standard as all North American firefighters," said Skrepnek.

The Mexican firefighters will be joined by 27 firefighters from Minnesota and Wisconsin as well just before a heat wave takes over Southern B.C.

"Firefighting is an arduous job even in mild temperatures, with the heat we are emphasizing to the crews to pace with themselves, stay hydrated, and eat the proper food," said Skrepnek.

"We always have plans in place to medivac people out of the front lines, but at this point we have had no heat related medical situations that I'm aware of."
