FireSmart BC is calling on British Columbians to prepare for the upcoming wildfire season by lowering wildfire risks where they live. 

The committee is urging neighbours to join forces to make themselves a FireSmart Recognized Community, which can be done through FireSmart Canada.

“Communities whose residents work together to reduce their vulnerability have a greater chance of limiting fire-related damage,” said Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. “We encourage all residents in rural communities to take simple and effective measures to FireSmart their homes and properties.”

There are now 65 FireSmart Recognized Communities in B.C., and over 100 communities involved in the program. For example, Anarchist Mountain in Osoyoos was classified a FireSmart Recognized Community and it covers 4,800 hectares of forested land. 

Being a FireSmart community means your area is focused on protecting each other, ready to evacuate at all times, and always prepared.
