Firefighters were called to Mayfair Mall on Wednesday evening after a fire broke out in a nail salon. 

The department said that at around 8:40pm they responded to alarm bells activated at Mayfair Mall. 

Upon arrival, the crew was met by Mayfair Security, who directed them to the zone where the alarm was triggered. 

“It quickly became evident that it was not a false alarm. With smoke pouring from a nail salon,” said the department. 

More personnel was requested, and over 500 feet of hose was used by the attack crew. The mall’s sprinkler system had also engaged.

The department said the fire was quickly knocked down and was contained to a single unit. Fire crews stayed on the scene for over two hours to help with water damage from the building sprinklers. 

“Mayfair is a large employer, and we did our very best to mitigate the damage to help the mall recover as fast as possible,” said Victoria Fire. 

Victoria Fire Investigators were called in to assess the fire and determine cause.

While crews were dealing with the challenges at Mayfair Mall, a new emergency alarm came in on Herald Street that required assistance from a neighbouring department.

Saanich Fire lended a helping hand, and confirmed that the other incident was a false alarm. 

“It just shows that with a growing city, there is also a need to grow our response capabilities.”
