Evacuation alerts have been rescinded for dozens of residents across the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) in Electoral Area F near Summerland and Faulder as the threat of wildfires in many parts of the Regional District has been drastically reduced.

The RDOS issued a news release Wednesday afternoon advising that the threat of wildfire has been reduced and the potential danger to life, health and property has diminished in certain areas.

BC Wildfire Services has advised the RDOS’ Emergency Operations Centre that the Evacuation Alerts in Area F can be rescinded.

Due to the area no longer requiring prompt co-ordination of action or special regulation of persons or property to protect the health, safety or welfare of people or to limit damage to property, the RDOS has also removed the State of Local Emergency for Electoral Area F.

An evacuation alert, pursuant to the Emergency Programs Act, issued for the properties in the vicinity of Callan Road, Highway 97 and North Beach Road north of Summerland has been rescinded.

The alert has been in place for 27 properties on North Beach Road, six on Hwy. 97 and one on Callan Road near Summerland.

Crews will continue to be working in the area. If conditions change and there is a potential danger to life, health or safety, a State of Local Emergency, evacuation alert or order may be re-issued, said the news release.

Evacuation alerts have also been rescinded for nine properties along Highway 97 near Okanagan Lake Provincial Park. All nine properties were located on Hwy. 97.

Evacuation alerts have also been rescinded for 25 homes on Fish Lake Road, 11 on Meadow Valley Road, six on Osborne Road, four on Savanna Road, two on Relkey Road and one on Marsh Lane near Faulder.

Declaring a state of local emergency enables local authorities (regional districts, municipalities) in the Province of British Columbia to utilize the emergency powers listed in the Emergency Program Act.

The emergency powers are used by the local authority to order the evacuation of residents from their homes, prohibit travel and enter private property when an emergency threatens lives, property or the environment within the local authority’s jurisdiction.
