The Disney Channel will be airing its first gay story line in the season two premiere of Andi Mack on Friday.

The episode features 13-year-old Cyrus Goodman, confiding in his friends that he has feelings for their mutual guy friend.

"In the season premiere of Andi Mack, a teen girl and her friends model inclusion and respect for others," tweeted the Disney Channel. 

It's the first time the Disney Channel has broached the subject of young teens questioning their sexuality and embarking on a coming-out journey.

Joshua Rush, 15, who plays Cyrus in the show, said on his Instagram page, "Starting conversations about trust, love, relationships and family dynamics is easier when you have a show that you can relate to."

He added that the show provides mentors for kids and parents to talk about such topics in a meaningful way.

PFLAG, the U.S.'s largest NGO that supports individuals and families with people in the LGBTQ community, said it was pleased with the thoughtfulness and planning that went into the first episode. 

Earlier in October, Disney was recognized with a 2017 Top 10 Innovations in Diversity & Inclusion Award.

In July of 2017, Disney and Sodexo partnered with Out & Equal and hosted a global Equality Institute in London.

The event focused on LGBTQ workplace equality and brought out more than 200 representatives from 100 companies in the U.K.

With a focus on workplace equality attempting to align with the stories it tells, Disney is starting to produce story lines that grapple with difficult topics for teens.

This year's remake of the Disney franchise, Beauty and the Beast featured its first gay character, LeFou.

The second season of Andi Mack premieres Friday, October 27th at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the Disney Channel.
