With any trend come the "cool kids".

Brands, that for whatever reason, appeal to a certain contingent.

These are the types of humans who exude effortless style, as though they just happened to pick up whatever was on their bedroom floor and look like they just walked off the cover of a magazine.

Inevitably, you know they're drinking something that you have 1. never heard of and 2. can never find. 

If you've ever wondered who the cool kids are of the wine industry – here's a glimpse into the wineries considered icons by the aforementioned demographic. 

Radikon (Italy)

One of the wineries in northern Italy, in the region of Venezia-Giulia in a small town known as Oslavia, responsible for resurrecting the ancient style of orange wine.

Often confused as a "trendy new style" – it's one of the oldest methods of winemaking that dates back thousands of years.

The Radikon family has a sad story – having lost their patriarch to cancer in recent years, resulting in son Saša taking the helm, carrying on his father's legacy of outstanding wine made in a very honest and transparent way.

I had the privilege of visiting Radikon summer of 2019 and was blown away by their process – a very hands-off approach in the vineyard limiting use of chemicals, this same approach echoed in the cellar where wines are left to age a minimum of 2-3 years in large format, old oak, with another year of bottle ageing, all prior to release to market.

When I asked how long they intended on using their oak for, Saša looked at me quizzically and said "forever!"

Marcel Lapierre (or anything from Morgon, France)

Mention Morgon, or Lapierre, to any of your hipster wine-loving friends and you'll be sure to get an impressed look.

Morgon is one of 10 "crus" of Beaujolais – the most revered regions producing high-quality examples of Gamay. Lapierre has been said to be responsible for starting the "natural wine" movement – rejecting any use of chemicals in the vineyard and approaching winemaking in a more holistic manner.

Gamay has historically had a reputation for being playful and non-serious – but manage to get your hands on any of Lapierre's Morgon and you'll be blown away at the soft, yet complex nature.

Klinec (Slovenia)

Located in the region of Brda, just kilometres from the Italian border (in fact, it's just a 20-minute drive away from Radikon).

The Klinec family makes everything by hand and from scratch. On-site, they have a jaw-dropping outdoor restaurant with a terrace that overlooks the surrounding hills of vineyards, that you can take in while sipping their outstanding wines and eating housemade prosciutto made from their own pigs.

The experience seems like it can't get any dreamier until you interact with the loving and welcoming family, husband and wife team Simona and Aleks, alongside daughter, Nika.
