Spanish clothing chain Zara is in hot water after the retailer had a shirt for sale that resembled the clothing worn by Jewish prisoners in concentration camps.

Backlash was swift from social media users after the children’s shirt appeared online. The white and blue striped shirt featured a six point yellow star on the front and was aimed at children aged three months to three years old. It appears to have the word “Sheriff” written on the star, but that didn’t stop people from making the comparison to the clothing worn by prisoners in the Second World War.

The boy’s shirt was pulled from Zara’s website and the company has apologized for the article of clothing. “We honestly apologize, it was inspired by the sheriff’s stars from the Classic Western films and is no longer in our stores,” said the retailer on Twitter.

In 2007 Zara found themselves at the centre of another controversy when a handbag decorated with swastikas hit store shelves.
