Nanaimo RCMP have announced charges in a hit and run earlier this year  that sent one woman to hospital and injured one of her dogs.
 
On March 4, 2022 at 3:30 pm, the woman was walking with her husband and two dogs on Lorenzen Lane in upper Lantzville.

The couple was walking single file facing traffic when a vehicle approached from behind and struck her. The collision drove all four of them into the ditch.
 
Before the suspect vehicle could drive off, her husband managed to obtain a partial plate and description of the suspect vehicle. EHS was called and transported the woman to hospital. One of her dogs later required a full knee replacement.
 
“The investigation was complicated and time consuming; however; investigators from the Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Unit were tenacious and able to identify the alleged driver and vehicle involved,” said R/Cst. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP. 
 
Joel Salazar, age 34 of Lantzville, has been charged with one count of failure to stop after an accident and failing to offer assistance, as well as one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm.
 
Salazar has been served with a summons and is expected to make his first court appearance in Nanaimo Provincial Court on Jan. 31, 2023.
