If this chilly fall weather has you wanting to bundle up and sit around a campfire, you’re going to have to wait a little longer.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) says a localized ban on campfires will remain in effect for now due to continued dry conditions and recent fire activity.

“While cooler temperatures have arrived, the region has not received sufficient rainfall to reduce the fire risk to safe levels,” an RDCO release explains.

The RDCO adds that local fire departments will “reassess the ban as conditions evolve” and no date has been set for lifting the restrictions.

The localized campfire ban remains in effect in the Central Okanagan despite the fact that the Kamloops Fire Centre lifted its ban on Category 1 fires for the greater area on Sept. 29.

Category 2 fires (open burning) are still banned for the whole Kamloops Fire Centre which includes the Central Okanagan.

Typically, when the fire hazard allows for it, opening burning permits run from Oct. 1 through April 30 for eligible property owners.
