  • Cannabis enthusiasts prepare to celebrate Vancouver’s annual 4/20 festival online

Vancouver’s equally iconic and controversial 4/20 festival will still take place this year, although for the first time, cannabis enthusiasts will enjoy the event from the comfort of their homes.

Hosted online by 420 Vancouver, people are invited to tune into the festival's live stream throughout the day for a variety of cannabis-related entertainment.

The event first originated at Vancouver’s Art Gallery in 1995 before moving to the city’s Sunset Beach, where it transformed into a full festival that attracted over 100,000 enthusiastic tokers in 2019.

However, the unsanctioned event has drawn ire from city officials, with organizers having never obtained a permit and policing and repairs to the grass fields costing the city tens of thousands.

That won’t be an issue this year, as a “social-distancing-friendly, home hot box session,” is set to take place beginning at noon PST.

According to the Vancouver 4/20 website, the celebration will feature talks from several cannabis activists as well as “music and clips” from the event’s 26-year-history.
