Blade Runner 2049, starring Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford and Robin Wright, opened in theatres across North America and international locations on Thursday, October 5th.

However, on its first two nights, the cult-classic remake is not doing as well as expected.

Sony still has high hopes the film will gross between $48 million and $52m over this weekend.

But so far, it's not looking so good.

The hugely expensive remake only grossed a cool $12.7m after Friday night – that's including $4m from Thursday night's showing.

This wouldn't be such a huge issue, if the sci-fi sequel didn't cost $155m to make.

While the 1982 cult classic was widely popular, fans and critics are starting to wonder if producers vastly overestimated the fanfare the remake would receive.

But it's early and there's still time to turn things around.

Meanwhile, The Mountain Between Us also opened in theatres this week. Starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, the thriller had its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival this September.

The film is expected to gross $11 to $12 million in its opening weekend – not a big deal if it doesn't, since it only cost $35 million to make.
