  • Big White opening day postponed, next ‘meaningful assessment’ expected Dec. 1

It looks like Big White Ski Resort won’t kick off its 2025-26 season until December.

Opening day was scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 27, but those efforts have been thwarted due to the lack of winter weather.

A statement from Big White says current snow levels are “below the threshold for safe operations.”

“Early-season snowfall has not reached the level needed to prepare terrain or operate lifts safely, and we will open the moment conditions allow,” the statement explained.

“Our teams have been working hard to get everything ready, and we are just as excited as you are to start another incredible winter. While Mother Nature has not delivered what we need quite yet, we remain optimistic.”

Although the mountain saw 11 cm of new snow overnight, around 50 cm more is needed to open runs and begin spinning lifts safely.

Resources are ready and waiting to jump into action once that snow does arrive, but opening day plans remain on hold until then.

“We are monitoring weather patterns closely,” the statement added. “Based on the current forecast, we expect to make our next meaningful assessment on Monday, Dec. 1, at the earliest, unless Mother Nature surprises us in the meantime.”

Big White says crews are ready to work at full speed to get people on the mountain once Mother Nature does cooperate, and will try to provide 48-hours’ notice before opening.

A lack of snow also delayed opening day at Big White in 2023, as the mountain didn’t welcome skiers and snowboarders until Dec. 8. In 2024, a strong early-season snow base allowed Big White to open six days early on Nov. 22.

While the ski season is being pushed back a bit, the village is running at full activity and the Welcome to Winter Christmas Light Up will go ahead as planned on Saturday, Nov. 29.

According to Big White’s statement, “it is a great time to visit, enjoy the festive atmosphere, and pick up your season pass before the busy stretch begins.”

The resort promised to keep the public updated with news about opening day here.
