  • BCTF President Stepping Down

The British Columbia Teacher’s Federation will soon be electing a new president.

After three years, and six years as vice-president before that, current president Jim Iker will be stepping down on June 30th.

Iker has been making headlines in his position as the figurehead in the fight for better working conditions for teachers in the province.

In January, the Supreme Court of Canada said they will hear the BCTF’s appeal of the 2015 BC Court of Appeal ruling, which took away collective agreements and some decision making from teachers.

On Saturday, March 12th, 2016, 700 teachers from across BC gathered in Vancouver, at the Hyatt Regency hotel, for the first day of the BCTF's 100th Annual General Meeting, kicking off a year-long celebration of the Federation's 100th anniversary.

At the AGM, which runs until Monday afternoon, members will vote to elect a new president, and two vice-presidents.

BCTF presidents typically only serve three one-year terms.

According to the BCRF, Iker will continue as an Executive Committee member for one more year as Past President.
