The BC government is asking residents to take prudent steps in anticipation for the encroaching spring flood season. 

British Columbia's most severe floods occur in the springtime and early summer when the water levels from a combination of rain and melting snow. Floods can also be caused by storm surges, ice jams or damage to water barriers like dams and dikes. 

In late March, NowMedia reported that the Okanagan could see warmer months leading to rapid snowmelt and increased precipitation.

In preparation, the province is advising residents to: 

• Protect your home by moving equipment and assets to higher ground if possible.
• Clear drains, eavestroughs and gutters of dirt, leaves and debris.
• Make evacuation bags packed with essentials for each family member.
• Recognize signs of approaching floods by looking at nearby waterways: a change in water colour or rapid changes in water levels (especially a drop) could indicate an issue upstream.

The province advises British Columbians to call local fire, police or public works department if they suspect something unusual. 

In the event of flooding, avoid river and fast-flowing waterway shorelines which could be unstable; do not walk or drive through flood waters, an adult can be knocked over by as little as six inches of fast moving water and two feet of water can carry away vehicles; and be wary of landslides as a result of heavy rain and melting snow.
