  • BC’s ‘Hollywood North’ economy generating billions

The numbers are in and B.C. had a great season at the box office during 2017-2018.

According to the latest statistics released by Creative BC, the 2017-18 fiscal year saw over 450 productions generate $3.4 billion for the BC economy, nearly a billion dollar revenue increase from 2016-17.

Filmed in Vancouver and Tofino, War for the Planet of the Apes contributed a whopping $81 million to the B.C. economy over 180 days of production and earned Joel Whilst of Kamloops an Oscar nomination for his work as the film's Special Effects Supervisor.

Large film productions are also beginning to make their way into B.C.'s Interior, with the province's film tax credits continue to be an allure for productions, with a 30% increase in motion picture productions in BC qualifying for tax credit certifications this fiscal year compared to the previous one.

Burnaby’s Eagle Creek Studios opened a new facility in Kelowna with a new purpose-built sound stage and Hollywood stars like Nic Cage and Anthony Hopkins have been spotted shooting scenes in the Okanagan.

Cage is currently shooting his second film in the region, after spending time shooting The Humanity Bureau in the South Okanagan during 2017.
