British Columbians received an update on the province's latest epidemiological modelling for the COVID-19 pandemic on Friday morning. 

According to the latest data, BC's current state shows the province has succeeded in flattening the curve of coronavirus cases thus far.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry cautioned that BC's success is due to public health measures, such as social distancing, travel restrictions and staying home rather than developing herd immunity theories. 

However, despite the success in flattening the curve, those public health measures will continue to be implemented for the foreseeable future.

BC's version of the pandemic most closely matched that of South Korea, however, due to its proximity to bad outbreaks in Washington State and Asia, the province had prepared its healthcare system for a worst-case scenario situation such as Italy's experience with COVID-19.

Health minister Adrian Dix did report the resumption of elective surgeries could start within a few weeks, along with some resemblance of a normal school week and changes that would help sectors of the economy be re-activated. 

But officials still believe a vaccine will have to be developed for the virus before BC could fully return to "normal" life such as non-essential travel.

When compared to other provinces in the country, BC has more reported deaths, but case numbers have flattened out compared to Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec.
