BC Ferries announced this morning that they have suspended food service in order to help slow down COVID-19.

“In continued support of social distancing, BC Ferries is suspending all food services onboard our ships and at our terminals , with the exception of our northern routes, which will have limited offerings,” BC Ferries said in a statement.

“During the COVID-19 situation, customers have changed their food purchasing habits and are choosing not to buy our grab-and-go items at this time, leading to tremendous food waste. Vending machines are still available.”
 
The company explained that they will be donating all their perishable food to Rainbow Kitchen, a food band that serves the community of Esquimalt and beyond with breakfasts and hot lunches prepared and served each day. 

Today the Rainbow Kitchen picked up more than 2,400 pounds of food from Swartz Bay. 

The food came from five ships and Lands End café. The items included things like mashed potatoes, coleslaw and fresh produce like cucumbers and onions.
