  • BC announces 25 new COVID-19 cases, death toll climbs to 87

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 25 new COVID-19 cases and one new death caused by the virus on Tuesday.

The death was reported to be a senior man in a long-term care facility in Vancouver, bringing the death toll to 87.

BC's total number of cases now sits at 1,724, with 109 people in hospital, including 52 in intensive care.

The latest confirmed cases include some but not all of the 28 workers at Vancouver's United Poultry plant who have tested positive for the disease.

Henry confirmed the plant as closed and that there's no evidence COVID-19 can be spread from consuming chicken or handling packaging.

The outbreak at the Mission Institution in the Fraser Valley has now grown to 76 people, 65 of whom are inmates and 11 staff.

COVID-19 cases by health region now sit at:

    • 707 Vancouver Coastal
    • 715 Fraser Valley
    • 109 Vancouver Island
    • 153 Interior Health
    • 40 Northern Health

On Monday, Henry announced that BC has expanded its testing protocol to include anyone showing COVID-19 symptoms being eligible to be tested.
