More snow is expected today and tomorrow for eastern Vancouver Island, including the Malahat Highway. 

A snowfall warning has been issued by Environment Canada, with 10 to 20 cm expected over this afternoon and Friday morning. 

“A Pacific low pressure system combined with cold outflow winds from the BC mainland inlets will produce snow over East Vancouver Island beginning this afternoon and become heavy in the evening,” the warning says. 

“Areas near the Strait of Georgia can expect 10 cm while inland areas can expect up to 20 cm. The snow will transition to rain overnight or Friday morning.”

Areas around Nanaimo and Malahat Highway can expect a risk of freezing rain during the transition from snow to rain tonight.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

Make sure to check road conditions ahead of time, and stay home if it is not safe for you to travel.
