A new standalone network of cannabis retail stores is on the way for British Columbia and business interests are high.

The City of Kelowna has already received over two dozen calls regarding business licenses for retail cannabis despite affirmations that nothing will take place until legalization.

“We've had a few dozen people reach out over the past two days and inquire about getting businesses going now that this announcement has been made,” said Ryan Smith from the City of Kelowna.

“However, we're not looking at them, and won't be until cannabis is legalized in Canada later this year.”

The B.C. government announced Monday that licensed cannabis retailers will be separate entities and only allowed to sell cannabis and cannabis accessories.

That means separate storefronts from businesses already selling alcohol, food or gas will have to be licensed and opened.

“The city is working on a land use control strategy as well as a business licensing strategy that will be rolled out after discussion with council and public consultation,” explained Smith.

“Residents can expect government and privately run cannabis retailers around the city, which means dispensaries that have been operating illegally are in the process of being shut down.”

The City of Kelowna is strongly discouraging businesses attempting unlicensed cannabis sales through the dispensary model.

“When legalization occurs everyone will be on a level playing field and can apply for the proper business license so that we have due process .”

The federal government has backtracked on its July 1 legalization date, now saying legalization will likely occur in early fall.
