Youth was well served on the third weekend-go-round of the 2019 Zone 2 (Thompson-Okanagan) Junior Golf Tour season.

Kelowna’s Cooper Humphreys, 14, took over the young season's order of merit lead with a win at the Two Eagles Golf Course on Saturday and a third-place finish on Sunday at Shannon Lake Golf Course.

Photo Credit: Lorne White/KelownaNowCooper Humphreys took over first place overall in the Zone 2 Junior order of merit.The Okanagan Golf and Country Club representative — sparked by a sizzling 3-under-par 29 on the front nine — shot a 1-over-par 66 to set the pace among 36 golfers at Two Eagles. His three birdies included the sinking of a 30-foot on the par-4 fifth hole.

The next day, Humphreys — competing in the bantam division (14-and under) — got off to another solid start by carding a 35 on the front at Shannon Lake and came in with a 42 for a 76 total that put him in a tie with juvenile (15 and 16) Jeremy Laverdiere of the KGCC. That was one stroke behind the junior-division’s (17 and 18) Justin Towill of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club, who led the field of 42 golfers with a 5-over-par 75 on the 6,121-yard layout in West Kelowna.

Photo Credit: Lorne White/KelownaNowJustin Towill of the KGCC won at Shannon Lake and was second at Two Eagles.By picking up 62.5 of a possible 70 points on the weekend, Humphreys, a Grade 8 Aberdeen Hall student, has accumulated a tour-leading 140.5 points in the six Zone 2 tournaments and has a six-point lead over fellow OGCC junior Brandon Frechette of Lake Country.

Frechette, 17, and coming off an outstanding volleyball season with the George Elliot Coyotes, finished in a tie for third place by firing a 71 at Two Eagles. He followed up with a 77 on Sunday at Shannon Lake to garner 20 points on both days.

Towill, also 17, moved into fifth place overall this season with a pair of runner-up finishes on the weekend.

Week 4 of the Junior Tour will see golfers resume play with tournaments at Kelowna Springs Golf Club on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.  and at the Kelowna Golf and Country Club on Sunday starting at noon.

EXTRA STROKES: Braxton McDonald of the Vernon Golf and Country Club posted a 72 from the forward (red) tees (5,012 yards) on Sunday at Shannon Lake to lead the bantam-aged (14 and under) golfers. He also led the bantams on the shorter tees on Saturday at Two Eagles, finishing with a 71 . . . Breanna Macpherson posted the low gross among the girls on her home course at Two Eagles on Saturday, carding a 75, and shot an 84 on Sunday at Shannon Lake to lead the female field.
