  • 14 Cases of Zika Virus in Canada

The Public Health Agency of Canada is providing updates on Zika virus, saying 14 cases have been reported in Canada.

This number was updated on February 25th, and will be reassessed again on Monday the 29th.

Currently, neither of the mosquitoes that transmit Zika virus can be found in Canada because of the cold climate, so, Public Health said there is a very low chance of getting the virus here.

At this time, no one has reported getting the Zika virus in Canada.

There is ongoing risk to Canadians travelling to countries in South America, especially along the South Pacific. According to the World Health Organization, there are 2 countries currently reporting local transmission of the virus, Aruba and Bonaire.

The first major outbreak of Zika was in 2007, and in 2015, it emerged in Brazil and Columbia.

In Canada, the National Microbiology Laboratory is able to detect the virus and offers testing support to provinces and territories.

As part of their West Nile virus surveillance programs, several provinces and territories keep records on mosquitos.

In the future, they may work to track mosquito species in the country, including species responsible for Zika virus transmission.
