A man is in hospital following a shooting near a homeless encampment in Nanaimo yesterday afternoon. 

The incident occurred at about 3:30 pm in the 200 block of Terminal Avenue.

Police responded to reports of gunfire near the encampment located on the banks of the Millstone River. 

When officers arrived on scene, they located an adult man with a life-threatening injury, believed to have been caused by a gun.

Police provided emergency first aid and were able to stabilize the man. He was then transported by ambulance to the Nanaimo hospital for further treatment.

Two adult men were taken into police custody, however, no charges have been laid. Police Dog Services responded and located a firearm in the vicinity of the incident. 

“Investigators are continuing their investigation and are expected to be on scene for most of the day,” said Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
 
While police were investigating the shooting, additional resources responded to a report of another man who had been stabbed in the 100 block of Victoria Road. 

The victim was not cooperative and no suspects have been identified. His injuries were considered minor in nature. He was treated at hospital and later released.  

“This incident was unrelated to the shooting but did require additional police resources to respond and to investigate properly,” explained O’Brien.
