(Update: Feb. 3, 2023): Police have provided an update in the investigation into the fatal stabbing of a man near Port Place Mall in Nanaimo.

At about 7pm on Jan. 22, 2023, police, fire and paramedics responded to a report of an individual who walked into the Port Place Mall with an apparent stab wound, who later succumbed to his injuries.

The incident occurred in the parking lot, in the vicinity of London Drugs.

BC Prosecution Service has approved a second degree murder charge against Sean Patterson for the death of Serguei Chiliakhov.

Patterson is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on February 16, 2023.

Police say they are investigating after a man died of an apparent stab wound last night in Nanaimo.

According to police, officers responded to the parking lot at Port Place Mall at about 7 pm, along with fire and paramedics.

The man had walked into the mall with a stab wound, in the vicinity of London Drugs.

First aid was initially provided by bystanders, until paramedics arrived.  

The victim was transported to the Nanaimo hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. 

A short time later, a man was arrested in connection to the stabbing. An area of the Mall and parking lot was closed for several hours to allow investigators time to examine the scene and collect forensic evidence.  

“As the investigation is only in the preliminary stages, it is too early to say what if any relationship existed between the victim and suspect. Police can though say with confidence, that they are not looking for any other suspects and there is no further risk to the public,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
 
Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or may have dash cam video to please call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2023-2530.
