John S. Martin, a former captain for the Toronto Fire Service, is seeking a spot on West Kelowna’s city council in next month’s general election.

Martin, who has over 30 years in public service, has been a regular at West Kelowna council meetings for a number of years and believes he can do more for the community by running in local government.

This will be his first time running in a municipal election.

“I have fought for smart development at many public hearings and know I can contribute to guide our city’s growth in a responsible manner and not just develop for growth,” states Martin.

Martin’s priorities include bolstering public safety with wildfire evacuation procedures and supporting community based policing to address growing crime rates.

He proposes a “keep our neighbourhoods safe” program to respond to crime.

Martin also wants to ensure the city “grows up right” with responsible development while investigating solutions to ensure clean water across West Kelowna.

Other priorities include supporting tourism job opportunities, engaging the community more when planning for parks and recreation and involving residents more on community projects.

“Working with our communities to improve these areas only benefits everyone. The residents are our untapped resource. If you listen, they will provide,” he says. 

“I have been in the public service most of my adult career and learned if you give of yourself you will be rewarded ten fold.”
