On Sunday, the Syilx Nation played host to the Junior All Native Tournament (JANT) opening ceremonies at the UBCO main gymnasium. It was the first JANT since 2019 due to COVID, and the second time Syilx Nation hosted, as they last did in 2017.

Over 2,000 people attended, in a celebration of First Nations pride.
The ceremony kicked off with a drum procession, and songs by High Water and DJ Kookum.
Next was the procession of athletes. A total of 65 teams, and more than 900 athletes marched around the gym showcasing their individual communities.
Following the athlete procession, a host of individuals performed speeches, including Chief Clarence Louie. The Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport’s Melanie Mark had an impassioned speech to the young athletes.
“Every child matters! You don't have to like politics, but let me tell you I am the first and only First Nations woman to ever serve in the BC cabinet and I am proud,” she said. “I’ll tell you a couple of things that are really important to me. One, your grandparents fought for us to have a life, to strive for better. Don’t forget that you have a great opportunity now. And the last thing I wanted to say is that what saved my life was playing sports. So have fun, be competitive and represent First Nations well!”

Traditional First Nations regalia and basketball items such as balls, towels and shirts were given out to the attendees, who were especially energetic throughout.
