  • Rick Mercer to address 2020 UBCO grads during virtual ceremony

Canadian icon and comedian Rick Mercer is set to address UBCO grads in the upcoming virtual graduation ceremony.

This virtual ceremony celebrates the accomplishments of UBC graduates, and while they can’t gather in person to mark the occasion, they will still be able to experience some traditions.

“While we may not be gathering in person, we stand with our graduates in spirit, take pride in their achievements and share their joy,” said UBCO.

The university explained that, incorporating traditions from UBC’s in-person ceremony, Chancellor Lindsay Gordon will preside over the virtual ceremony.

UBC President and Vice-Chancellor Santa J. Ono will also address the Class of 2020 live, dressed in full academic regalia.

While graduates may not be able to shake the President’s hand on-stage, they will have an opportunity to take a selfie with him—virtually, of course.

Mercer was a 2010 UBC honorary degree recipient. During the 45 minute ceremony, he will deliver a keynote address bound to bring laughter and inspiration to the students.

The ceremony will be live streamed here on June 17. It will also be available on YouTube, Facebook and Panopto.
