(UPDATE: Dec. 17 @ 1 pm) – RCMP have confirmed a 52-year-old man died as a result of Monday's crash on Highway 1 near Revelstoke. 

Around 3:45 pm, emergency crews responded to the accident approximately 18 kilometers east of town, where a sedan heading westbound had collided with a commercial vehicle in the other lane. 

While the commercial vehicle driver was uninjured, the driver and lone occupant of the sedan later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. 

RCMP report the initial indication is that the sedan crossed the centre line, during a curve, on a two-way section of the highway. 

Road reports at the time describe conditions with minimal visibility and compact snow. 

Highway 1 was closed east of Revelstoke for approximately 10 hours as a result of the crash. 

(UPDATE: Dec. 17 @ 6 am) – Hwy 1 is once again open to traffic after being closed for more than seven hours on Monday night.

The accident that was reported around 18 kilometres east of Revelstoke was cleared shortly before midnight.

West of Revelstoke, crews executed some pre-planned avalanche control around Three Valley Gap from 2:30 am until 4:30 am.

That work is now complete and the road is open there as well.

However, conditions are less than ideal along many stretches of Hwy 1 and if you can avoid travel today, it would be wise to do so.

(Original story: Dec. 16 @ 4:45 pm) – DriveBC is reporting the Trans-Canada Highway east of Revelstoke is closed in both directions.

The closure was first reported around 4:30 on Monday afternoon and is due to a vehicle incident.

About an hour before the closure, DriveBC sent out a warning regarding the winter road conditions on Highway 1 near Revelstoke.

One Twitter user is reporting a head on collision between a semi-trailer and a vehicle, however, that information has yet to be confirmed.
